Questions
Straight answers.
Everything homeowners and businesses ask us before they get started. If your question is not here, our contact page reaches a person within one to two business days.
For homeowners
Is Handvetted free for homeowners?
Yes. Homeowners never pay to use Handvetted. Businesses pay for the introductions they receive, and that fee never changes the price you are quoted.
How many companies will contact me?
One. We select a single verified professional for your project and location, brief them on your details, and they call you. Your information is never resold or shared with anyone else.
What does hand-vetted actually mean?
Every business passes four checks before it can be matched: an active state license confirmed through official registries, a background check on the owner and operators, a 4.5-star or better rating across review platforms, and a final review by a real person.
What if the match is not a fit?
Tell us. If your matched professional cannot take the job or is not right for it, we re-match you with another verified business at no cost.
How fast will I hear from my match?
Most matched businesses call within one business day, and many the same day. If you have not heard anything by then, contact us and we will follow up or re-match you.
Can I request a specific company?
Not yet. We select the match based on your project, your ZIP code and the business's verification and capacity. You can tell us about a company you want to avoid, and we will honor that.
Do you cover my area?
Handvetted matches homeowners across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia, with dedicated pages for the 100 largest cities and towns in each. If your ZIP code is not covered yet, we route your request to the nearest verified business and confirm by phone.
Will I get text messages?
Only if you check the consent box on the request form. Messages confirm your request and your match and help with scheduling. Reply STOP at any time to cancel. Details are in our Terms of Service.
For businesses
What does it cost to be listed?
There is no listing fee and no contract. Businesses pay per introduction they receive, at a rate set by category and market, and billed in small batches. Missed or unanswered introductions can be disputed.
Are the requests really exclusive?
Yes. Each homeowner request goes to exactly one business, and ZIP codes within a category are reserved for one partner at a time. If a ZIP you want is taken, you can join the waitlist for it.
What do I need to apply?
Your state license number where the trade is licensed, proof of active general liability insurance, the names of the owner and operators for the background check, and links to your review profiles. A person on our team reviews every application, usually within five to seven business days.
What happens if my rating slips or a license lapses?
Your account is paused until the issue is resolved. We re-verify on a schedule and whenever a homeowner reports a problem.
Licensing by state
Does North Carolina license roofers?
Not as a separate trade. A general contractor license from the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors is required for projects of $40,000 or more. Below that, roofers are not state-licensed, so Handvetted verifies insurance, ownership background and review history instead.
Which parts of North Carolina does Handvetted cover?
All of it. We match homeowners in the 100 largest cities and towns and the communities around them, from Wilmington and the coast to Charlotte, the Triangle, the Triad and Asheville.
Do South Carolina roofers need a license?
Residential roofers performing work over $5,000 must be registered as residential specialty contractors with the South Carolina Residential Builders Commission. Handvetted verifies that registration, insurance and the owner's background before any match.
Where in South Carolina do you match?
Statewide, with dedicated pages for the 100 largest cities and towns from Charleston and Columbia to Greenville, Rock Hill, Myrtle Beach and the communities around them.
Does Georgia license roofing contractors?
Roofing is covered under Georgia's residential and general contractor licensing when the work exceeds $2,500, administered by the State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors. Handvetted verifies the license, insurance and ownership background before matching.
Which Georgia cities does Handvetted serve?
All of Georgia, with dedicated pages for the 100 largest cities and towns including Atlanta and its suburbs, Columbus, Augusta, Macon, Savannah and Athens.
Does Tennessee license roofers?
Roofing projects of $25,000 or more require a license from the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors, and smaller jobs in certain counties require a home improvement license. Handvetted verifies the applicable license, insurance and ownership background before matching.
Where in Tennessee do you match?
Statewide, with dedicated pages for the 100 largest cities and towns including Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Clarksville and Murfreesboro.
What contractor license does Virginia require?
Virginia's DPOR Board for Contractors issues Class C, B and A licenses by project value, and roofing, HVAC and remodeling contractors must hold one. Handvetted verifies the license class, insurance and ownership background before any match.
Which Virginia communities does Handvetted cover?
All of Virginia, with dedicated pages for the 100 largest cities, towns and communities from Virginia Beach and Norfolk to Arlington, Richmond, Roanoke and Charlottesville.
